When you returned to work after the long Thanksgiving weekend, your office halls may have been decked. That’s because property managers across the country were busy adorning their buildings with holiday decorations intended to spread cheer this holiday season.
Their efforts are not wasted. Not only do decorations give buildings a little more charm, they’re thought to boost morale among tenants. And we all know that happier workers are more productive employees.
In addition, the festive decorations help building owners and managers create a distinct and special sense of place at their assets, so much so that people who don’t work there will sometimes visit the building to admire the decorations. Some employers even believe a decorate workplace encourages employees to come into the office more regularly during the holiday season.
Of course holiday décor looks nice, but it also helps property managers create a sense of community among building tenants. There’s a sense of unity at the building when everyone there, regardless of their age, race, gender or income, can share their awe for the decorations and experience the joy this time of year brings.
“Celebrating the holiday season is just one way we’re elevating the experience of people who work in and visit the buildings we manage,” said Dan Pufunt, President of JLL Property Management.
Pufunt explained that it’s more than just decorating that JLL property managers are doing this holiday season to keep tenants and guests feeling productive and fulfilled, including:
- Hiring carolers and local musicians to perform holiday music in the building lobby over the lunch hour
- Offering free coffee, tea and hot chocolate to tenants as they enter the building on particularly cold mornings
- Hosting pop-up shops in the building lobby featuring artwork, jewelry and clothing from local artisans and retailers, all of which serve as unique holiday gifts for loved ones
- Inviting Santa to visit the building to meet with the children of tenants
- Serving breakfast to tenants as a token of the building owner’s appreciation
- Playing holiday music softly throughout the common areas
For JLL property managers, the season means more than just festivities, however.
“We also find purpose in helping our tenants connect with one another and the greater communities in which they work, and the holidays provide a great opportunity for doing just that,” Pufunt explained.
Property managers can partner with a local non-profit to organize a toy, food or coat drive at their building, making it easy for tenants to give back this holiday season.
“Hundreds of our property managers will lead efforts to provide holiday gifts and warm clothing for underprivileged, disadvantaged or homeless children in their communities this year,” said Pufunt.
Pufunt went on to explain that these efforts aren’t just feel-good measures; they make good business sense.
“Most of these events require minimal coordination efforts on behalf of the property management team, but they go a long way in increasing tenant satisfaction and retention, both of which are critical drivers of building value,” Pufunt explained.
